Boundaries

A family sees their own children, and nothing else

Access is derived from the guardian relationship on the student record, including the court-order flags, so a restriction set by the registrar takes effect in the portal rather than depending on anyone remembering it.

The rules it enforces

A parent portal holds children’s data. These are the constraints that keep it contained.

Linked children only

Access comes from the guardian relationship on the student record, and only where that relationship is marked as receiving information.

Court orders are enforced

A custody restriction removes that guardian’s access to the child in the portal, rather than relying on staff discretion.

No cross-family leakage

A guardian cannot reach another family’s child through any route, including shared class content.

Age gating

Below a configurable age the student portal is read-only or disabled entirely, by policy.

Everything is audited

Portal actions are recorded, which matters when a parent disputes what they were told and when.

Questions about parent portal

Do parents with several children need several logins?

No. One guardian account covers every child linked to them, including children at different campuses of the same institution, with a child switcher at the top of the screen.

Is there a mobile app?

The portal is mobile-first and works in a phone browser, which is what families use day to day. Native parent, student and teacher apps are catalogued and on the roadmap rather than available today.

Can we stop parents messaging teachers directly?

Yes. Two-way messaging can be switched to broadcast-only institution-wide, or restricted by policy to certain roles and hours. The same applies to leave applications and document requests.

What about separated parents where one has restricted access?

Custody and court-order flags are set on the student record by the registrar, and the portal enforces them. A guardian whose access is restricted does not see that child, and the restriction does not depend on anyone remembering it.
